Équiterre review: Here’s what’s been keeping us busy over the past month. 🌍

Hello ,

From an environmental standpoint, 2025 promises to be a very busy year: elections, electric vehicles and agriculture, to name just a few. In fact, a number of issues are already leaving their mark on 2025.

With the ascent to power of openly climate-denying politicians, the growing prevalence of deceptive greenwashing practices and the proliferation of disinformation, we certainly will not lack for work in the coming months.

We are already hard at work voicing our concerns and expectations with regard to the next government, in cooperation with the nonpartisan coalition Vire au vert. Environmental regression simply won’t fly in Quebec.

Let’s ring in the new year on a hopeful note, and thanks for standing tall with us!

Tips on eating better, and for less money

What if we told you a great way to start the year is to try new things and make lasting changes in our habits, all the while saving money?
Well, good news: we’re here to help you do just that! As part of our new initiative Shop Smarter Eat Better, we have introduced a host of new tools to make our food a powerful lever for the environment, without spending a fortune. On the contrary, in fact!

How do you get started? Each week, we’ll send you practical tips on how to lower your grocery bill and make better food choices. So sign up!
Recently, we brought together experts like Loounie Cuisine to share their advice on how to cook cheaper and greener. If you missed this webinar, you can watch it here (in French).

We are also working with institutions to help them adopt healthy, sustainable menus, and with caterers so that such menus can be available at small and large events – like at the office, for example. When hosting future events, ask your caterer for planetary health menus or look for events that offer this type of menu.

Suspension of subsidies for electric vehicles: we know who’ll be left holding the bag

A few weeks ago, Ottawa and Québec announced a pause in subsidies for purchasing electric vehicles (EV). This is very concerning for future EV buyers, who will have to manage without this helping hand.
At Équiterre, we’re convinced that the automobile industry has the capacity and wherewithal to lower their prices on EVs. Want proof? A number of manufacturers have already done so! Rather than asking the public or governments to pick up the tab for a range of ever-larger models that guzzle more fuel and cost more money, how about they put their shoulder to the wheel.

This is a file we’ll be paying close attention to this year. To learn more about electric vehicles, check out our guides and the latest news about our initiative Running Electric.

Climate

The world has surpassed the 1.5°C warming limit: now what?

There has been much talk in recent years of the 1.5°C global warming limit. And now that we have officially passed it, there are so many questions we must ask ourselves: What does this mean, in concrete terms? Is it too late? How will this affect our daily lives? Well, we have some answers.
