Several significant dossiers will mobilize our forces in 2024. In this month’s newsletter, we’re highlighting the potential and importance of encouraging reflection and discussion towards the systemic changes necessary for the well-being of our society.

The enormous potential for electric bikes to reduce car usage

Trying out new ways of getting around is a great step towards meaningful change. Case in point: as part of our Vélovolt initiative, 42% of people who tried an electrically-assisted bicycle (EAB) for their commute to work said that the experience lead them to change their travel habits for their daily commute, many of them deciding to swap their car for a bike over the long term. EAB’s are a great alternative to regular bikes for longer or hilly journeys, and for those for whom conventional bikes are not accessible. Another great solution for reducing pollution from cars!

Energy
Northvolt and the weakening of public participation mechanisms

The Northvolt battery plant project was given special treatment from the Quebec government. Just before approving the project, the government modified regulations in order to allow the company to bypass certain environmental protection and public participation requirements. Équiterre, along with other environmental groups, have called for an independent environmental evaluation. But beyond the Northvolt project, we’re concerned about how the government is weakening our public participation mechanisms and making decisions behind closed doors. We must call on the government to do better.

Quebec’s environmental protection and public consultation mechanisms are in place to favour societal well-being and confidence. The government must respect these mechanisms.

Cast your vote for the worst car ad of 2023

Are you tired of seeing SUV ads everywhere? So are we! Not only do they encourage people to buy big, polluting, expensive vehicles, they also put SUVs in the middle of nature, where they don’t belong. Équiterre has compiled a selection of Quebec’s worst car ads over the past year, and you’re invited to vote for the one that you'd like to see banned. The goal is to continue to pressure the federal government to regulate car advertising.

Please support Équiterre in our work to develop social transformation projects
and to pressure our governments to do better.
