Équiterre review: Here’s what’s been keeping us busy over the past month 🌍

The cold is slow to set in this fall, allowing us to spend some beautiful days outdoors. It reminds us to make the most of this time of year, to spend time in nature and with loved ones, rather than worrying about Black Friday deals.

But it’s important to remember that the warm weather we’ve seen this fall is not normal and that the impacts of climate change are also becoming increasingly destructive. Climate action and solutions, such as reducing emissions from the transportation sector, are necessary at all levels.

We also must honour the everyday heroes who are working towards a more sustainable world. Have a look at how these inspiring leaders in institutional food are working with our Commun’assiette initiative to transform our food systems, thousands of healthy and sustainable meals at a time.

A solution to help us opt for more durable products

How is it that things break so easily these days, when our grandparents were able to hold on to their products for decades? It makes no sense to be constantly replacing expensive household appliances and electronics.

What can we do about it? Équiterre is proposing a durability index, which would provide clear and easily accessible information on how durable a product is (for example, a mark from 1 to 10) indicating how easily it can be repaired or upgraded, among other things.

Our new report says that for 73% of Canadians, a durability index would influence their purchase decisions. They’re already doing something similar in France. So what are we waiting for in Canada?

Many farmers are going into debt to grow our food

703_Thumbnail-ChaqueTerreCompte3

When your job is as important as feeding Quebec, it’s not right that you should have to go into debt to make a living. Yet more and more farmers are facing this challenge, with farmland becoming increasingly expensive and less and less available. Quebec farmland is under threat, and it’s not easy for those who cultivate it to survive.

Équiterre and the SaluTERRE Alliance are amplifying the voices of the men and women who are on the front lines of this crisis. Their stories are distressing, but also inspiring.

It’s important to remember that there’s no food without farmland. If, like us, you are grateful for the work that our farmers do and you recognize that the land that they cultivate is essential to our survival, please take action with us. Send this pre-written email calling for the government to protect our farmland.

Federal election: Quebec will not back down on environmental issues

Quebec is known for having strong environmental values and principles, which, through decades of activism and decisions made by Quebecers, have guided our society and development.

With a federal election approaching, some political orientations could threaten what Quebec has built on the environmental front. It’s crucial that Quebec stands strong on our environmental principles.

That’s why, with Vire au vert, we’re calling on the federal political parties to respect the principles of the Quebec Environmental Consensus. The message is clear: Quebecers will not support a party that does not commit to respecting our environmental values. Do you agree?
